The child and adolescent psychiatry program at LSU Health Sciences Center-Shreveport has a full complement of four residents. The faculty includes five child and adolescent psychiatrists, two psychologists, and child and family therapists. A forensic child and adolescent psychiatrist serves as adjunct faculty, providing a forensic didactic seminar ending in a mock trial experience. During their first year, residents spend 50% of their time on the inpatient child and adolescent psychiatry units at Brentwood Hospital. Residents see outpatients in the LSU child psychiatry clinic during each year of training. They also attend Child Neurology Clinic and Neurodevelopmental Clinic. Residents have a research experience in the first year at the Psychopharmacology Research Unit, participating in clinical trials. Consultation-liaison experiences include school consultation and inpatient pediatric consultation at the LSU Children's Hospital, Burn Unit and Trauma Unit. Residents rotate at the Cara Center, which provides acute diagnosis and management of child abuse and criminal neglect. Residential treatment training sites include Holy Angels Residential Facility, serving individuals with mental retardation, and The Methodist Children's Home. Forensic psychiatry experiences include rotations at the Ware Youth Center, a combined juvenile detention, group home and shelter facility. Of the 115 participating programs in the 2007 Child PRITE, our residents scored a program mean of 98th percentile. Of the 119 participating programs in the 2008 Child PRITE, our first year residents scored a program mean of 93rd percentile and our second year residents scored a program mean of 98th percentile. During the first year of our child psychiatry training program, the Brad and Kay McPherson Endowed Professorship in Child Psychiatry was established. This endowment will provide support for a nationally-recognized visiting professor to present a seminar annually, enriching the educational experience in child psychiatry for residents and others in the region.
